Franktown Area and the Kingery Feeders

Franktown has Castlewood Canyon State Park, Hidden Mesa, Gateway Mesa, the Cherry Creek Trail and several gravel pit lakes.  We'll visit the areas which seem to have the most interesting birds in October.  Some birds are here year round and some have arrived to spend the winter or are passing through.  Among the birds we are likely to see are the scrub jay, spotted towhee, and maybe a Townsend's solitaire, which has arrived for the winter, singing among the junipers.　 We'll end the morning by eating lunch while we watch the Kingery feeders at their house.　 Dress warmly and wear hiking boots. Bring lunch.

Meeting Place: Meet on Castlewood Canyon Road (Douglas County road 51) just south of Colorado 86. Park on shoulder at this corner. Do not go into the state park. Intersection is (a) 1/2 mile west of Franktown or (b) 8 -9 miles from I-25, exit 184. For (a), take Parker Rd./Colo. 83 to Franktown (about l0 miles south of Parker); go right at traffic light.  In a quarter-mile, turn left on Castlewood Canyon Rd (just after you cross Cherry Creek turn lane). Stop there.　 For (b), turn left at exit l84 on Founders Parkway (Colo 86), continue about 4 miles to traffic light; left still on Colo 86, 4.5 miles to Castlewood Canyon Rd (turn lane), right on Castlewood Canyon Rd. Stop there.
