A unique outing to bird in New Mexico's Colfax County and Colorado's super scenic Huerfano and Las Animas counties. This three-day two-night adventure will seek a wide variety of nesting birds and migrants, from prairie and high desert to mountain forests and woodland. Day 1 will focus on birding in Huerfano and Las Animas counties, ranging from lower elevations to about 10,000 feet in the Culebra Range. Day 2 will focus on New Mexico's Maxwell NWR and Cimarron Canyon. Day 3 will explore more of giant Las Animas county's landscape and maybe other counties on the way homeward. Expect a wide array of migrant and nesting species. We will look for Grace's Warbler, Hepatic Tanager, Eastern Phoebe, Ovenbird, Lewis's Woodpecker, Flammulated and Saw-whet Owls, Western Screech-Owl, and Northern Pygmy-Owl, Common Poorwill, Juniper Titmouse, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Golden-crowned Kinglet, maybe Roadrunner and much more. At least one evening (optional) will be spent seeking owls, requiring us to be out until a fairly late hour. We will spend two nights at Trinidad, and have dinners together in restaurants there. Participants are responsible for their own lodging and meals. Bring snacks and lunches and drinks for the three days; we can restock at convenience and grocery stores. Plan for mostly short walks each day, adding up to two or so miles each day; some may be on single track trails with moderate gradients. Warm to hot weather is possible, and lots of sunshine. Rated strenuous for full days afield, warm to hot conditions and some long drives. We will carpool, and each rider should anticipate a fixed fee for mileage reimbursement of $65 to $75, to be announced. Plan A is for two cars and eight people, but we may expand the trip to three cars and up to 12 people if there is interest and we can secure three drivers.
This trip is led by David Suddjian and Ryan Corda.
