Description

This is a co-sponsored trip with Denver Field Ornithologists.  Registration is on the DFO page and will open on 3/7/2026. Click here to view the event registration page

For this field trip we will be visiting the Dinosaur Ridge Hawk Watch. The hawk watch is located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains at the top of the Dakota hogback geologic formation. Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawk watch in Colorado and is the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Birders of all experience levels are welcome. No previous hawk watch experience is necessary. The last week of March is typically the peak Red-tailed Hawk migration. We will also have an opportunity to observe non-raptors such as Mountain and Western Bluebird, Mountain and Black-capped Chickadee, Rock Wren, Townsend Solitaire, Canyon Wren, and several nuthatch species.

The trail to the hawk watch is steep, with a 260 elevation gain over 0.6 mile. The closest restroom facilities for this field trip are at the Matthews/Winter Park trailhead, located a short distance from the meeting location. There are no restrooms at the Hawk Watch. Binoculars, spotting scope and/or camera are recommended. Bring water and a snack. You are welcome to pack a lunch. Attendees are encouraged to learn more about the Dinosaur Ridge Hawk Watch on thier website.

This trip is led by Jason Bidgood.
