Description

Join the DFO spring hawk watch on this trip to Dinosaur Ridge. This is the best spot in the country to see migrating Ferruginous Hawk in spring, which are early migrants beginning in March. We are likely to also see Red-tails, Bald and Golden Eagles, and a few accipiters. Identifying flying raptors is very different from identifying them perched. The criteria used are different, with less emphasis on color of different parts, and a greater emphasis on structure and flight style. Many of the raptors at this site can be distant, but we will focus on those that are near and moderate distance, easily findable. Bring your binoculars, bird books, snacks/lunch, drinks and sunscreen. There is a 0.5 mile walk uphill to the hawk watch site, and conditions may be muddy or icy depending on recent weather. You can get a free Raptor ID, an app from Hawk Watch International for Android and iPhone. Please learn the ID of Red-tailed Hawk - shape of the bird in flight, patagial mark, belly band, etc. as this will be what we compare other hawks to, to ID them.

This trip is led by Ajit Antony and Liza Antony.
