Description

Last minute/pop up field trip to the South Platte Reservoir at the south end of South Platte Park to look for the "rare" Surf Scoter and the "uncommon" Long-tailed Duck.  Rare and uncommon are the terms used by eBird and these 2 species have been at the reservoir for at least a week.  We will spend the 2 hours walking the south side trail of South Platte Reservoir.  Meet at the parking lot nearest to the vault toilet restroom.  This will be the only restroom available.  The walk is rated as moderate because there is a steep, short switchback up to the reservoir, after that, plan to walk 1 to 1.5 miles on a flat dirt and gravel surface.  Snowy and icy conditions may be present and it is usually windy. Bring binoculars, water, snack, sunscreen. Scopes and cameras will be very helpful.

This trip is led by Cindy Breidenbach.
