Description
Join us for a winter birding walk at Barr Lake State Park where vast open water and cottonwood-lined shores create one of Colorado’s premier birding destinations. As winter settles in, Barr Lake comes alive with thousands of waterfowl and raptors—expect to see flocks of ducks such as Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked, Lesser Scaup, Goldeneye, and Bufflehead, along with Canada, Snow, and possibly Ross’s Goose gathered on the ice edge. Overhead, we might find Bald Eagles, Northern Harriers, American Kestrels, Red-tailed Hawks a there is even a chance for Merlin, Rough-legged and Ferruginous Hawks. We'll keep an eye out for songbirds like American Tree Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Northern Shrike, and Western Meadowlark. The walk will follow a section of the South Shore Trail, a level and easy path, but the experience is considered moderate in difficulty due to the potential for cold temperatures, wind, and uneven footing in spots. Participants should dress warmly in layers, bring binoculars or a spotting scope, sturdy walking shoes, water, and snacks or a warm drink. Even in winter’s chill, Barr Lake offers remarkable wildlife encounters and a peaceful immersion in Colorado’s winter landscape. A state parks pass is requried for all vehicles.
This trip is led by Ryan Dibala.
