Birding and Tree ID on the Mt. Blue Sky scenic byway

Description

This is a co-sponsored trip with Denver Field Ornithologists. Registration is on the DFO page.  Click here to view the event registration page

This trip will combine birding along Colorado 103 with a second focus on learning to identify and appreciate the various conifer tree species that occur in our Front Range region forests. We will ascend from about 8,000 feet at Bergen Park to about 11,000 feet and learn to identify nine different tree species in the forests as we climb higher in elevation. Special study materials will be provided to participants to enrich this part of our effort. Birds may not be too plentiful or diverse at this season and elevation, but we may find Canada Jay, American Three-toed Woodpecker, Pine Grosbeak, Red Crossbill, Red-naped Sapsucker, Brown Creeper and Townsend's Solitaire, and migrants are possible. We will carpool from the meeting spot. There are restroom opportunities at intervals. Bring lunch, snacks and drinks, sunscreen, hat and sturdy shoes. We will have short walks at several stops.

This trip is led by David Suddjian.

Meeting spot: Meet at the Stegosaurus parking lot just south of I-70, exit 259. Drive under the freeway to the second left turn. The parking lot is at the base of the Hogback, near the Hawk Watch location.
