Summary
Description
Let's visit some of the fun birding spots at the refuge, seeking a mix of prairie birds, marsh birds and riparian birds. We might find Cassin's, Brewer's, Vesper, and Grasshopper sparrows, Lark Bunting, Burrowing Owl, raptors, ducks, grebes, and maybe some early migrant shorebirds. We may walk the Bluestem Prairie Loop and the Havana Ponds Trail, we'll visit some of the lakes, and we will drive the Wildlife Auto Drive. An early start gets us out while the day is cooler and the birds are most active. Plan for lots of sunshine and probably warm temperatures. Bring sunscreen, hat, snacks and lots of liquids. Total walking distance may be about 2-3 miles on level, sunny trails. Restrooms available at the meeting spot and at intervals after. We will carpool for the wildlife drive. **Note: the meeting location is at Prairie Gateway Open Space, not in the refuge.
This trip is led by David Suddjian.
Meet near the restroom in the the parking area for the Prairie Gateway Open Space along Gateway Road, north of Prairie Parkway and before entering the national wildlife refuge.
