Summary

A 5-mile walk through Ponderosa forest

Description

This is a co-sponsored trip with Denver Field Ornithologists. Registration is on the DFO page and will open on 7/5/25 at 12 Noon.  Click here to view the event registration page

We will hike a loop from the upper (west) parking area of the park, covering about 5 miles in Ponderosa forest with areas of grassland and scrub. We hope to find Dusky Grouse along the way, maybe even a mama with chicks. And we can also enjoy the various forest birds of the park including Western Tanager, Plumbeous Vireo and Red-naped Sapsucker. Great chance to enjoy the end of the nesting season in our foothills and to experience the breeeding bird community of the forest. We will be on single track trails and broad paths with some moderate grades and rocky areas. Bring sturdy walking shoes, hat, sunscreen, water and a snack. Restroom at the meeting spot, and behind the green door.

This trip is led by David Suddjian and Anne Craig.

Meet at the West Trailhead Parking Lot off Belcher Hill Road (not the overflow parking lot). From Denver, take I-70 west to CO 58 (Exit 265). Follow this to the end and turn right/north on CO93. Take Golden Gate Canyon Rd on the left after 1.4 miles. In 3.8 turn right onto Crawford Gulch Rd. Make a right onto Belcher Hill Rd (there is a sign for the park). To register for this trip, click here to visit the registration page on DFO's website. Please note you will need to create an account on the DFO website to register for the trip.
