Description
A three-day / two-overnight foray to the Lamar region near the peak of spring migration! This is some of Colorado's best birding. We will visit many key hotspots in several southeast Colorado counties seeking migrant diversity and "eastern" species. We will look for some of the southeast CO specialties, warblers, flycatchers, shorebirds and more. In addition to a high variety of migrants we may see Greater Roadrunner, Nor. Cardinal, Mississippi Kite, Chimney Swift, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Chihuahuan Raven, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Painted Bunting, Scaled Quail, Black Rail and maybe other specialties depending on where we go. Exact plans will be determined as the trip approaches. We may bird in Crowley, Otero, Bent, Kiowa, Prowers, Baca, Las Animas and Cheyenne counties, but there are so many hotspots to choose from we won't be able to get to them all. Birding spots may include Lamar Community College woods, Two Buttes, John Martin Reservoir area, Melody Tempel Grove, Holbrook Reservoir, the Queens Reservoirs, Higbee Road, and more.
We will spend the nights of May 12 and 13 in Lamar. Participants are responsible for their hotel lodging and meals. The leader will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express. These will be three full field days, with some long drives and covering a lot of ground. We may walk 2-3 miles each day. We may have lots of sunshine with fairly warm temperatures, and maybe lots of wind (hopefully not too much). Bring sunscreen, hat, and sturdy shoes suitable for possible muddy conditions. Bring the food and drink you will need for lunch and birding through the day. We can have dinners together in restaurants in Lamar. Restrooms will be limited in some areas. We will carpool from the Castle Rock rendezvous and will need volunteer drivers. Riders can expect to reimburse drivers following DFOs recommended mileage reimbursement of $0.50/mile divided by the number of people in the car, or less at the driver's discretion. We will cover a lot of territory and reimbursement of about $75 per person should be anticipated.
