Summary
Description
Join us for a morning stroll at Genessee Mountain Park!
The dominant trees and shrubs of the foothills consist of Ponderosa Pine, Douglas-fir and a few deciduous species, which attract cavity-nesters, seed-eaters and other visitors. We’ll focus on small, medium and larger species: including - chickadees (both Mountain and Black-capped), all three species of nuthatches, bluebirds, goldfinches, woodpeckers and summer possibilities of flycatchers, tanagers and perhaps a raptor or two. There are always LOTS of possibilities in this habitat type!
This is a casual “stop and listen” dirt trail route that goes to the high point in the park, then back down on a hard surface. It’s about 1 1/2 to 2 miles, depending on interest and weather.
Although this Denver Mountain Park can have quite a few feathered residents, it also has its share of dog-walkers and early morning runners and occasional bikes, so be prepared for others sharing this space. It’s usually quiet enough to two focus on bird songs and calls.
Meet at Genessee Mountain Park at 7AM.
- Drive west on I-70 as it climbs out of Denver
- Exit at the Genesee exit and turn an immediate left, driving over I-70 to the stop sign
- Turn right and you’re now on South Genesee Mountain Road. This is a winding road with driveways, parking spots, etc. This road dead-ends at the parking lot where we’ll meet.
- If you’re early, there’s shade under the picnic tables, restrooms, and a cool old stone building to check out.
