Summary

Enjoy a 3-hour trip to the South Platte River, Reservoir, and Park!

Description

This trip, geared toward younger bird enthusiasts, will take us on a roughly 3-mile meander on both flat paved and hilly natural trails, with a likelihood to see a good number of duck and other waterfowl species who rely on the South Platte River for winter habitat. There’s always the possibility to see uncommon loons, scoters, grebes, and mergansers on the reservoir this time of year. Dress for the weather (including footwear!), bring water and a snack if desired, and binoculars (loaners may be available, please let us know in advance if you’d like to borrow a pair for the trip).

Trip Leader: Sarah Leavesley. Please call Sarah at (317) 809-9839 if you have questions about the field trip.

Meeting Place: Google maps link: Parking lot https://maps.app.goo.gl/oyo1nb2impZxv5kv6?g_st=ic Meet at the parking lot just below the southeast corner of South Platte Reservoir. Accessible via S. Platte Reservoir access road, which is a sharp, non-obvious right turn off South Platte Canyon road if coming from C-470 (near an RV business). If you get to a dead-end parking lot, you’ve gone one lot too far.

Please Note: If you have registered and no longer can attend the walk, please contact the Denver Audubon Office (Rhonda Shank 303-973-9530) as soon as possible.

  •  Advance registration, including signing of the liability waiver is required. Walk-up or impromptu participants will not be allowed.

  • You are responsible for bringing your own binoculars, water, snacks and sunscreen for optimum experience

  • Cameras are permitted

  • This trip is not accessible for those with mobility issues.

COVID Guidelines: We will follow the current guidelines for the county where the program takes place.
